Other Awards Given to Individual Players

The MVP Award is the most well-known of all the individual player awards. However, it is not the only one. While they are not as big and prestigious as the NBA MVP award, you can still sometimes find odds for them as well. The same committee that picks the MVP will assign these awards as well.

  • All-Star Game MVP
  • Coach of the Year
  • Community Assist Award
  • Defensive Player of the Year
  • Executive of the Year
  • Finals MVP
  • J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship
  • Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Most Improved Player
  • Rookie of the Year
  • Sixth Man of the Year
  • Sportsmanship Award
  • Twyman–Stokes Teammate of the Year
  • IBM Award (defunct)

How Does the NBA MVP Work?

A lot of people wonder how the NBA MVP works. They often think that they simply crunch some of the top players’ statistics and see who comes out on top. This is not the case at all. If it were, there would be no NBA MVP betting odds at all, because we would all know the answer.

Instead, a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters meets and awards points to individual players. It is ranked voting, so they can choose their top five best players during the regular season, awarding a different amount of points to each player.

This means it is very different from betting on the Brooklyn Nets to win the Eastern Conference or the Clippers to win the Western Conference. You can expect an MVP tobe on a good time, but these are two different things.

This system began in the 1979-1980 season. Before that, the actual NBA players voted and decided who would take home the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as that year’s MVP.

And the MVP Award is an even bigger deal than most people realize. Every NBA athlete who has won the award and has been eligible has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. This is a moment to be enshrined for years to come as one of the all-time greats. And only one time did a player win the award without making it to the playoffs

Here are some of the top contenders for winning the NBA MVP this year.

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
  • Nikola Jokic
  • Victor Wembanyama
  • Luka Doncic
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo
  • Anthony Edwards
