Motorcyclists Warned Against Summer Rides in Death Valley
As summer approaches, Death Valley National Park urges motorcyclists to reconsider their plans to ride in the park. In observance of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the park highlights the serious dangers riders face during the hot summer months.
Temperatures in Death Valley can soar to 130 degrees, and once the heat index exceeds 99 degrees, the air no longer offers any cooling relief, even when riding at speed. Combining high heat and protective gear increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

“Every year, motorcycle riders are injured or killed due to the extreme conditions in Death Valley. Your safety is our top concern, and we want you to return home safely so you can keep riding,” stated Superintendent Mike Reynolds.
For those planning to ride this summer, park officials recommend the following safety tips:
Check active park alerts for weather updates and closures.
Plan your route ahead of time, as cell phone service is limited in most areas of the park.
Ride during the cooler parts of the day, ideally before 10 a.m.
Take regular breaks in air-conditioned or shaded locations.
Slow down on curves.
Ride in the center of the lane in a single file to ensure better maneuverability on roads with narrow shoulders.
Park officials suggest that the best time for motorcyclists to visit is between October and April when temperatures are cooler and riding is safer.
