Ladies and gentlemen, we tread into some slightly different directions here. While it is clear what is at stake for Texas when it comes to gambling and prediction markets, the candidates offer some distinct differences and that is important to mention. Election Day is a mere 11 days away. It seems hard to believe but the midterm finish line is almost here.
It has become clear that Texas will take on gambling and the prediction markets in 2027. Most assumed that online betting sites are not going to be truly legal anytime soon. However, the 2027 legislative session expects to feature some new proposals and maybe some refurbished older ones to make another attempt at legal sports gambling.
Experts understand the market but underestimate the tooth in the fight. One of the wrinkles is between the Governor and Senate races in the state. Some of the biggest problems with a few candidates is finding what they stand for here while others make it crystal clear.
The road remains perilous for Texas when it comes to sports betting and prediction markets. Yes, the elections in Texas may be a little more dicey than some would expect. Do we see full red, full blue, or something in the middle? How does it shape laws and regulations going forward? These are excellent questions because the answers are not black and white.
The Governor’s Race
The Texas Governor’s race is unexpectedly tight if you believe the polls. Do understand that there is healthy skepticism here. Polls have been ranging from 3 to 6 percentage points in favor of Greg Abbott. Gina Hinojosa. Naturally, while Las Vegas is speculating here, Texas bettors and voters remain very active and expect to have their say in the matter.
As many keep saying, Abbott has shown history in outperforming the polls as Republicans have especially in the state of Texas. There is a nationwide trend of about +3 to +5 percent compared to poll averages. Margins of error aside and the race for the top seat in the state is a good deal tighter than most would be accustomed to especially if one is on the right side of the aisle.
Texas has the power to make things uncomfortable in the gambling and prediction markets world. Obviously, this Texas legislative team has been among the most persistent in this fight. Can the state keep persisting here? Yes, especially if Abbott gets re-elected. Most of the Republicans under him are leading in polls by about the same margin he is.
Again, Hinojosa does not really have a stance here while Abbott is at least more willing to work with high-end casinos, etc. For those wanting sports betting and prediction markets in Texas, again it is not very clear. Abbott is around -300 to -400 to win another term as Governor with an over/under margin of victory set at 3.5 percent.
Tight Margins for the Senate Race and Beyond
Texas belief suggests that Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick should also narrowly win as well. Where things go sideways may be the Senate race between James Talarico and Ken Paxton. With various deposit methods at one’s disposal, sports bettors possess plenty of options and the numbers are surprising. BetUS, Bovada, and others set Talarico as a very slight favorite somewhere in the -150 to -175 range.
Here lies the problem. Talarico, unlike Hinojosa, has a different stance compared to other candidates and especially the social conservatives in Texas. The Democrat supports legalizing gambling and even prediction markets in an effort to create more jobs. His gambling ties are considerable and even include some donations from PAC’s supported by casino heavyweights in the state.
Now, this is where the debates begin. Not every candidate has the same stance along the same party lines. The new Attorney General race is interesting but again this helps enforce policies. Mayes Middleton holds about a 4-6 percent margin lead in the polls. Middleton strongly opposes legalizing gambling and will 100% enforce Texas’ constitutional ban on illegal and online gambling.
That is where it gets tricky in Texas. With the CFTC controlling prediction markets and an expected Supreme Court ruling soon enough, what happens next? If the state runs red as expected, Texans should likely see little or no change for most of 2027. Things will be blocked again.
What about Election Day?
Yes, Election Day creates its own sense of chaos. This is something which will be interesting to monitor. Prediction markets lean even more heavily on Talarico and Abbott which creates an interesting split. That is because Abbott is more willing than Paxton/Patrick when it comes to working with gambling and casino entities.
Now if something happens unexpectedly where Texas goes more blue then all “bets” are off. Forgive us for the bad pun. Anyway, this is why the election is so important for Texas gambling and casino advocates. It is like being in a bed full of strange bedfellows.
Alas the courts could come in earlier in 2027 and make a lot of this conjecture moot. Even fewer project that to happen.
At this point, bettors want to know one way or the other how this may go. Sadly, no one truly knows because the moving parts keep increasing. Here at Vegas Sports Betting, we are sounding more red alerts. Remember, November is only the beginning. Many steps are left before bettors and opponents alike see something closer to an endgame. Buckle up for what figures to be another wild ride!
