The first 2025 meeting between NFC East rivals the Washington Commanders and the Dallas Cowboys takes place during Week 7 of the 2025 NFL season. Washington has alternated wins and losses over the first six games of the 2025 NFL season. The club is coming off a road loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 6, where the home team claimed a 25-24 win via a 38-yard walk-off field goal as time expired on Monday night. Dallas has also not won two games in a row this year. The Cowboys enter their home matchup against the Commanders following a 30-27 road loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 6. Like Washington, they lost on a walk-off field goal. Dallas has not won at home since its 40-37 Week 2 win over the NY Giants.
Washington and Dallas have met 130 times over the years. The Cowboys have dominated the series with a 79-49-2 record. The teams split their two-game series in 2024 with Dallas winning 34-26 on the road in November, and Washington picking up a 23-19 win at AT&T Stadium in Texas in January.

Six weeks into the 2025 NFL season, it is apparent that defense is the weak spot of the Washington Commanders. The team has allowed 46 plays of 15 yards or more, which ranks them 30th in the league. They have also allowed six plays of 40 yards or more, which is the second worst in the NFL. Against Chicago, the Commanders gave up 381 total yards, allowing Caleb Williams 252 passing yards and D’Andre Swift 108 rushing yards. The Commanders should be concerned this week, as the Cowboys have one of the more explosive offenses in the NFL, averaging an NFL-leading 387.5 yards per game.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels has thrown for more than 200 yards in each of the four games he has played in 2025. On Monday, he went 19 for 26 for 211 yards, throwing three touchdowns and one interception. His completion rate for the game was a season-high 73.1 percent. Daniels has been sacked 11 times this year. In addition to his passing yards, Daniels picked up 52 rushing yards against Chicago on 10 carries. His best day on the ground since the team’s September win over the NY Giants.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt leads the team in rushing with 344 yards. He averages 5.7 yards per carry, but he has fumbled in back-to-back weeks, and the Commanders cannot afford to give up the ball to the Cowboys offense. Washington has a turnover ratio of -3 this season.
Like their opponents in Week 7, the Dallas Cowboys rely on their offense to get things done. The Dallas defense has given up 21 pass plays of 20-plus yards and 24 runs of 10-plus yards this season. To make matters worse, the team does not put much pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The team also struggles on third downs, giving up a first 53.17 percent of the time. No team gives up more total yards (411.7) or passing yards (269.5) than Dallas, and the Cowboys surrender the fourth-most rushing yards (142.2). The defense is second-worst in the NFL in points per game (30.7).
The Dallas run game has been bad over the past two weeks. The Cowboys had 180 yards on 29 carries against the Jets, but 66 of those yards were on a Javonte Williams carry in the second quarter of that game. Against the Panthers, the Cowboys had 31 yards on 19 carries, with the longest run being six yards.
What the above means is that the Cowboys are left to rely on quarterback Dak Prescott, and he has largely delivered. Prescott is second in the NFL in yards (1,617) and touchdowns (13), and fourth in completion rate (71.6 percent). He has thrown three interceptions and been sacked seven times. Overall, Prescott is second in QB rating (79.2).
The Cowboys cannot rely on Prescott to win them games on his own.
The over might seem high for this game, but with the lack of defense and the abilities of the two quarterbacks, the betting pick is for the Commanders and Cowboys to combine for more than 55.5 points on Sunday.
