Since 2009, only two teams have won the AFC East division title. The New England Patriots dominated the division from 2009 to 2019. Since 2020, it’s been the Buffalo Bills finishing at the top of the AFC East. Ahead of the 2025 NFL season, the Bills are the strong betting favorite to win the division for a sixth straight season.
Led by quarterback Josh Allen, the Bills look to extend their franchise-record stretch of AFC division titles in 2025. The team’s previous best stretch came when they won four in a row between 1988 and 1991.
According to the betting odds, the New England Patriots have the best shot at unseating the Bills from the top of the AFC East.

Despite matchups against the Baltimore Ravens (Week 1), Kansas City Chiefs (Week 9), and the Philadelphia Eagles (Week 17), the Buffalo Bills are pre-season betting favorites in each of their 2025 regular season games. Last season, Sean McDermott and the Bills finished with a 13-4 record. During their run as the top team in the AFC East, Buffalo has two seasons with a .813 winning percentage (13-3), 2020 and 2022.
The Bills were excellent last year behind MVP quarterback Josh Allen, but team defense hurt the club. Buffalo addressed that issue, signing five-time Prop Bowl edge-rusher Joey Bossa as a free agent and picking up Maxwell Hairston in the draft. The club also addressed its defensive line in the draft, using three of its first four picks to shore up that part of the defense.
If Buffalo’s offense remains solid, and the changes on defense improve the team on that side of the ball, the Bills should easily win the AFC East, which, of course, is not the club’s overall goal heading into 2025. Buffalo wants to win the Super Bowl.
The New England Patriots finished the 2024 NFL season with the worst record in the AFC East at 4-13. The oddsmakers seem to expect a much better performance from the club in 2025.
New England has a new head coach in Mike Vrabel, who replaces Jared Mayo, who lasted one year at the helm after replacing long-standing team leader Bill Belichick. Vrabel inherits a team that is led by quarterback Drake Maye, who is heading into his second season as the team’s starting QB after going third in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Patriots had a good defense in 2024. The team looked to make that a great defense in 2025 as they signed Carlton Davis, who will compliment Christian Gonzalez in the secondary. The defensive line added Milton Williams from the Philadelphia Eagles. Williams should help the Pats put more pressure on opposition quarterbacks.
Also bolstering New England’s chances at a strong 2025 season is the fact that the team has one of the easiest schedules in the conference.
The Miami Dolphins have finished in second place in the AFC East in the past two seasons. However, the team’s results were very different. In 2023, the Dolphins went 11-6. Last year, the club wrapped up the season at 8-9.
Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was limited to 11 games last season because of concussion issues. The team needs a healthy Tagovailoa available if it hopes to get back to the postseason in 2025. When he plays, the Dolphins have a dynamic offense. When Tagovailoa is out of action, the team struggles (2-4 last year) and has an anemic offense. The team has addressed the depth chart behind Tagovailoa heading into 2025, but the club needs him on the field and performing at his best.
If Tagovailoa is healthy, the Dolphins need him to up his game against top-level competition. Over the past two seasons, Tagovailoa is 1-9 against teams with a .500 record or better. Against teams below that threshold, he is 16-2.
Miami has a pretty easy schedule in 2025, with their opponents having a 0.474 winning percentage last year.
The New York Jets have not had a winning season since they went 10-6 in 2015. At the end of every season since then, the club has finished in third or fourth place in the AFC East. It is unlikely that the Jets will break that streak in 2025.
The Jets will go where their free-agent signing quarterback, Justin Fields can take them. Fields inked a two-year deal worth $40 million with the Jets after starting six games (4-2) with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.
The Jets had a good defense last year, but there are too many questions on offense ahead of this season to gve them much of a chance to win the AFC East.
