In 2025, the Detroit Lions look to accomplish what the Green Bay Packers achieved earlier in this decade, and that is to win the NFC North in three straight years. Last year, Detroit finished the season 15-2, with the Minnesota Vikings close behind at 14-3. In 2023, Detroit’s 12-5 record put them on top of the Division, ahead of the 9-8 Green Bay Packers. The Packers, the last team to win the NFC North three times in a row, accomplished that feat in 2019-2021. The 2025 NFL preseason betting odds have the Lions listed as the betting favorites to win the NFC North this season.
According to those odds, the NFC North will be one of the most competitive divisions in the 2025 NFL season. With three teams, the Lions, Packers, and Vikings in the running to take home the division title.

The Detroit Lions and their fans expect to win the NFC North in 2025. Last year’s team finished the season with a fantastic 14-3 regular season mark, but fell to the Washington Commanders in a 45-31 upset in the division finals. Detroit will enter the 2025 NFL season looking to put that loss behind them and focus on getting to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
Head coach Dan Campbell will be in charge of the Lions once again this year, but the team has new offensive and defensive coordinators, as former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn departed for head coaching gigs with the Chicago Bears and New York Giants, respectively. Former Denver Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton takes over as offensive coordinator, while Kelvin Sheppard moves from Detroit’s linebacker coach to the defensive coordinator spot. Also new to the coaching staff is running backs coach Tashard Choice, who worked with Lions star running back Jahmyr Gibbs at Georgia Tech.
The 2024 Lions led the NFL with 33.2 points per game and point differential (+222). The club added free agent signing cornerback D.J. Reed to help on defense, but they lost Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow, who retired at 29 for health reasons.
The Green Bay Packers finished the 2024 NFL season with a strong 11-6 record, which, thanks to the depth of the competitive NFC North, was only good enough for third place in the division.
The big news for the Packers came on draft day when the team selected Matthew Golden with the 23rd pick in the first round. That pick made Golden, who played for Texas in 2024, the first receiver the Packers drafted in the first round since they selected Javon Walker in 2002. The hope is that Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love and Golden can click and give the team’s offense a boost and give the running game, which carried the Packers for much of the 2024 season, a break.
The Packers’ offensive line is a work in progress, but free agent signing Aaron Banks and second-round draft pick Anthony Belton should help on that front. Green Bay did not do much to address the defense, but to be frank, the defense was one of the team’s strong points in 2024.
The pressure will be on Love and the offense to produce this year.
When the Minnesota Vikings lost presumptive starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy because of a knee injury in training camp in 2024, the team turned to veteran Sam Darnold. Darnold and the Vikings surprised many when they opened the 2024 NFL campaign on a 5-0 run. Back-to-back losses to Detroit and the LA Rams slowed the team, but they bounced back to finish the season with an impressive 14-3 mark. Darnold is gone in 2025, moving to Seattle on a three-year $100.5 million deal. With that, the team is in McCarthy’s hands, and expectations are high.
“He’s confirmed everything that I hoped to see early in training camp through his performance last Saturday,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said of his QB, “but our fan base and everyone should just be excited about the fact that we’ve got our young franchise quarterback, I believe, in the building. And now it’s about the unique aspect of continuing a very critical development process for him, where maybe the physical reps aren’t going to be there in the short term, but this is going to be a small bump in the road.”
The team shored up the offensive line, which was needed, in the offseason, adding Will Fries and Ryan Kelly. The club also drafted Donovan Jackson in the first round. The team also picked up Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave to help on the defensive line.
While the Lions, Packers, and Vikings all seem to be in the running to win the NFC North, the same cannot be said of the Chicago Bears, who finished the 2024 NFL season with a 5-12 record. The last year Chicago had a better than .500 finish was 2018, when they won the division.
The Bears shook things up in the offseason, grabbing Ben Johnson to be the club’s head coach. The former Lions offensive coordinator said that one of the reasons he took the job in Chicago was to work with second-year quarterback Caleb Williams.
The club also switched up its interior offensive line ahead of the 2025 campaign, which was a must after the club allowed a league-high 68 sacks in 2024. Chicago also looked to the draft for offense, picking Michigan tight end Colston Loveland, Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III, and Boston College tackle Ozzy Trapilo.
The Bears’ defensive coordinator this year is Dennis Allen, who has 23 years of NFL experience, including six as a head coach and eight as a defensive coordinator. Look for Allen to reshape the Chicago defense.
Having Johnson on board signals a culture change in Chicago, and while this year will likely be a season of growing pains, the move should be a positive one in the long run.
The Detroit Lions still look to be the team to beat in 2025, but it won’t be a surprise to see the Vikings or Packers putting pressure on them throughout the 2025 NFL season.
The betting pick is for the Detroit Lions to win the NFC North in 2025.
