Thus far to start the year, local betting numbers and revenue figures have been impressive for Nevada, with Las Vegas of course playing a role in things. However, not everything has been great to see. That’s because with the legalization of things across the country, it has led to the news that online sports betting continues to impact Las Vegas tourism.
Not long ago, a report came out that the numbers for visitors to local casinos in Sin City were a bit of a decline, but with some of the biggest sporting events coming and going in the last month, the numbers this winter in terms of visitors has been on the decline, which is something officials surely are not happy about. The fact of the matter here is that the growth or online betting in several more states is impacting things in a negative way.
Before, Las Vegas was one of the top places in the United States for people to travel to for their sports betting needs. Because of this, folks would plan their vacations around certain events, taking advantage of the local laws. However, with online sports betting now being much more open and accessible, it has decreased the need for people to plan their trips around making wagers in Vegas.
In turn, it’s having a drastic impact on the tourism, which leads to local businesses suffering. Later this year, the hope is that things are going to turn around with big events, such as the NCAA Tournament, NBA Finals, World Series and more. However, for now, there’s worry that the numbers are going to continue to drop. It’s something that’s definitely going to be worth monitoring throughout the rest of the quarter.
In pretty dang concerning news, unofficial reports are claiming that Super Bowl visits were also on the decline for Las Vegas this year, which is of course a massive bummer. As we mentioned above, Sin City is a place where people love to visit, as going to local sportsbooks and watching the action live is a real treat. This has always been the case for the Super Bowl too, with people checking NFL Vegas odds and throwing money down.
However, despite the game not being too far away in Santa Clara, California this year, the same kind of buzz was not present like it normally is. Again, it feels safe to assume that the legalization of sports betting and online sports betting in particular has opened the door for people to pass on packing their bags for Las Vegas and just staying close to home instead for the game.
Think about it. Say you live in Florida and you wanted to place a wager either on the Seattle Seahawks or the New England Patriots for your Super Bowl betting needs. Had this been a few years back, you would have potentially considered planning a trip to Las Vegas to watch the game at a sportsbook, while also getting in on the betting fun. However, things have changed there.
For a little while, sports betting is now allowed in Florida, with things limited to the Hard Rock app. While there’s not a robust set of options for sports betting like in other states, the door has been opened for Floridians to make their bets from the comfort of their own home. Because of that being the case in so many other states too, it’s no wonder that Super Bowl visits were down in Vegas for this year.
While the majority of this piece has unfortunately been filled with some negative updates, it has been made clear that no legal sports betting in California continues to help Las Vegas in a big way. Just like Texas too, California is yet to get things across the line in terms of getting a sports bill passed. A few years back, there were two initiatives that passed and were present on the November voting ballot.
However, both of those initiatives, which pinned the local tribes against the major sportsbooks companies, failed and they weren’t even close to getting the necessary votes for legal sports betting to be put in place. Because of that, there’s been a major delay for California sports betting, which has been frustrating for sports fans all over the state. However, it’s been a positive for Nevada and Vegas.
Sin City keeps on getting a large chunk of visitors for sports betting needs. Unfortunately, California still has a major problem with illegal sports activity, but there are still countless people who make the drive or take the short flight to Vegas for the big events and sports betting activity. It saved Las Vegas early this year and to close out 2025. However, much more than that will be needed for the tourism numbers to get back on track.
