Fortunately for Republicans, history and numbers may finally shift things in New Jersey. When it comes to governor races, New Jersey is one of those lightning rod races. Four years ago, there was plenty of controversy when Phil Murphy won re-election. A 3am shift in Bergen County still remains a mystery to this day as Murphy narrowly won. Jack Ciattarelli probably could have asked for a recount but did not.
The question may be why. Some long-standing rumors said that if Ciattarelli stayed quiet, the Democrats might be more apt to put a weaker candidate out there for 2025. Has that happened? Now, this depends on who you talk to. Mikie Sherrill is probably not the most ideal candidate. She has several feathers in her cap but some troubling skeletons too.
Now, the same can be said about Ciattarelli. After all, he lost an election no one expected him to win. Normally, that is no big deal. However, he is a pretty resounding underdog once again. Why is that? Some of this stemmed from the backlash with Donald Trump and the contentious Republican primary. The other reason is that there is a Democrat “Blue Wall” in urban New Jersey that could derail his hopes again.
Anyway, this is an election that could get spicy and fast. Democrats are taking a beating across the United States but Republicans are too in some ways. The most dangerous party is the one that is wounded. It is a longer shot but BetUS has Ciattarelli winning listed at +500.
Bluntly, USA political futures bets and the Virginia Governor do not seem ideal partners here. Virginia is a purple state that often leads more blue err Democrat. The fact that the current Governor Glenn Youngkin cannot run (term limits) is significant. What may be more notable is that two women are battling it out for the prestigious position.
This sets up for quite an epic race over the next 10-12 weeks. Winsome Earle-Sanders is the current Lieutenant Governor and has performed well in the position. Her opponent, Abigail Spanberger, knows that Virginia is the party of the opposite. Since 1977, the state has elected a person from the opposite party in the Gubernatorial seat. That means Spanberger is a shoe-in right?
Most everyone assumes in the betting world this as fact. Numbers tilt toward Spanberger as Republicans are now a +800 longer shot to retain control in a state where Kamala Harris won the 2024 delegates by 5.8%. However, a deeper look into the numbers reveal that Republicans are making up some ground. This could be a surprise state once again in 2025.
The biggest certainty is that Virginia will have its first female governor. Now, we get lucky to expect one of the most competitive elections (hype-wise) in recent memory. The stakes are high here. Spanberger and the Democrats have a $11 million spending advantage. Money is not everything. Look at the Presidential election in 2024. An upset is possible.
We are still early when it comes to the USA Political Futures bets. Politics is ever-changing in this country and races are always going on. Look at California who will have to elect a new governor next year. Some think Gavin Newsom may be forced out this year. The fact that +2200 odds have been placed on this is notable. If Karen Bass expects to survive into 2026, Newsom will too. Put the money elsewhere.
With the way things are going, check out that California race for next year. There are all plus-money candidates and some intriguing ones too. A small wager could prove to be profitable. Finally, again there is that NYC Mayoral race with Zohran Mamdami a -600 favorite. Eric Adams at +600 might be still worth a flier. Might. Good luck!
