The last two NHL final rematches have seen the team that lost the first year win the second year. However, the five previous rematches all saw the same team sweep to wins in both years.
The Panthers have won three in a row and are 8-3 straight up in the past 11 games against the Oilers. Edmonton has the home-ice advantage in this series. The team holding the home-ice edge has won each of the past four Stanley Cup finals.
The biggest mystery entering the NHL final is whether there’s something wrong with Edmonton superstar Connor McDavid. The star forward spoke with the Oilers training staff and left Sunday’s practice early.

It’s fueling speculation that the player who’s leading the NHL playoffs in scoring with 26 points is nursing a physical ailment. Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters that there’s nothing major wrong with McDavid.
An NHL GM was once suggesting that NHL playoffs should be renamed goalie due to the importance goaltending holds in winning a title. And certainly in this series, when it comes to puckstoppers it’s advantage: Florida.
Not only has Florida netminder Sergei Bobrovsky won a Cup and the Vezina Trophy, in these playoffs he’s displaying a 2.11 GAA, .912 save percentage and three shutouts.

As for Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner, when he’s been good, he’s been very good. And when he hasn’t the apt descriptive would be yikes.
Over his last two playoffs, Skinner has allowed 30 goals in his 20 victories. He’s surrendered 51 goals during his 13 losses. That includes 20 goals against in four losses this year.
Those who set the odds are anticipating this to again be a hard-fought, long series. In a total games prop, over 5.5 games is set as the -215 favorite at Betonline.
Oilers captain McDavid is showing as the -105 chalk to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the NHL playoffs. Panthers goalie Bobrovsky has the shortest odds of any Florida player at +270.
There’s co-favorites in a number of games in the series prop play. Both six games and seven games are given betting lines of +190. Oddsmakers are setting the Oilers to win 4-3 as the +400 chalk in an exact series outcome prop. You can get +450 odds on Florida to win the Cup in six games (4-2), or seven games (4-3).
Another prop play is the highest total goals scored by one team in a single game of the series. That’s set at 6.5 goals and the under is the -125 favorite. Total power-play goals in the series is set at 7.5. Play it either way – over or under – and the betting line is -120.
Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl is establshed as the +275 chalk to lead the NHL final in goal scoring. Draisaitl’s total points are set at 7.5 and the over is given favorite’s odds of -145. McDavid is the +130 betting choice to be the top point getter in the series. His total points are set at 9.5 and the under is favored at odds of -145. Betonline is assigning Florida’s Brad Marchand a +200 betting line to lead the NHL final in penalty minutes.
Noting that NHL superstars Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby both won the Stanley Cup in their second opportunity, certainly that historic reference is leading to speculation that McDavid will rise to the occasion and lead the Oilers to glory.
While the Oilers are the sexy pick, it’s overlooking the fact that the Panthers are a relentless, physically intimidating bunch. It’s going to be a close, likely seven-game series, but Florida’s resilience makes the Panthers the pick in NHL final betting.
