For as long as a lot of people can remember, the Sports Betting Alliance in California has been pushing for sports betting to no longer be illegal in the Golden State. However, while consistent efforts have arrived, nothing has been able to get done. Well, the push there is far from over, but no one can argue that California’s sports betting delay keeps benefitting Las Vegas and its casinos. However, efforts in California keep coming in.
Not long ago, news broke that a ‘YES Pledge’ was launched by the in-state SBA, with a document making its way online where local tribes are asked to work together to get on the same page to help sports betting get done. More specifically, this pledge is working for online sports betting to arrive in California for everyone to take advantage of. The efforts haven’t gone anywhere in the past, leading for people to go to Vegas for their sports betting needs.
While there is some support here, it doesn’t mean that everyone is on board. According to an article from Yahoo Sports, it states that a large number of the tribes in California are ‘not on board’ with the pledge and they’re not supportive of how things have been drawn out. There’s historically been a division among the tribes and the big-name sportsbooks when it comes to the California betting push.
Previously in California, there were two different sports betting bills that people voted on. One was led by the local tribes, and the other was powered by sportsbooks. Both bills failed miserably and everything went back to square one. The fight for legal sports betting is ongoing, but California being one of 11 states yet to legalize it is something that people still find hard to believe.

Illegal sports betting continues to be a major problem in California
As you can probably imagine, illegal sports betting continues to be a major problem in California and things aren’t going to slow down until things get flipped. This time of the year too, it feels like things reach a new level because of football and baseball action being in full swing – don’t forget that the NBA season is right around the corner too and people have a close eye on the soccer action.
In terms of the football season, NFL and college action is something that people follow consistently. In the NFL alone, fans are consistently checking out the Las Vegas odds for the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers. All three of those teams are a lot of fun to watch and everyone in the state would love nothing more than to be able to place some legal bets on them.
However, that’s currently not the case. Because of that, people are forced to either place their bets through illegal bookies they’re in contact with or through offshore accounts. The fact that millions and millions of dollars are being wagered through these channels is absurd, but what other options do people have? This will all be changed once betting is legalized, but no one knows when that will happen.
Once the NFL postseason gets here too, a jump in the illegal activity is expected to arrive. The Chargers are considered a top team in the AFC and the team’s supporters all over Los Angeles are going to be intrigued by their Super Bowl betting odds. The hope is that in the future people can place their SB bets on the Chargers in legal fashion, but we know this year that’s not going to happen.
When will California sports betting arrive for everyone?
A question a lot of people have on their minds right now is when will California sports betting arrive for everyone? Unfortunately, things are totally in flux there. It’s still unknown if a solid sports betting bill will be present on the 2026 ballot, though multiple reports suggest that things are pretty unlikely there. At this point, it might be safe to assume that things will be delayed by at least one more year.
Should that be the case, that would mean that the earliest we’d see things on the ballot would be for 2027. That’s obviously not what people in the state want to see or hear, but it would give both opposing sides more than enough time to try to work together and come up with a plan that everyone can be happy with. Will egos be put aside to make this happen?
At this point, your guess is as good as ours, but there needs to be a major focus shift if California sports betting ever does arrive. The fact of the matter is that California is one of the biggest states in the USA and not having legal sports betting has set it back. Texas is in the same boat, which people can’t believe. Only time will tell if things end up changing for both states in the future, but the delay means more money being spent in Las Vegas.
