Haiti Couleurs is the best bet in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. He has class to prove, but is coming off of a pair of winning preps and it’s a good time to step back up to the top level. He is a prodigious winner – nine wins in his last 12 outings – and unlike many of the other major contenders, he has proven he can get the Gold Cup distance and even longer. It may get to be too much for others, but Haiti Couleurs is well weighted and should have plenty left to finish.
Gaelic Warrior comes in for Willie Mullins, a trainer who has won this race four times already. He has been defeated in his last two, but they were both good efforts against proper Grade 1 company. The good ground expected on race day should suit him well, and with wins going as long as three miles and one furlong, the odds are good that he’ll stay the Gold Cup distance.
The Jukebox Man won a thriller in the King George VI (G1) in his last start, taking a four-horse photo that included both Gaelic Warrior and Jango Baie. He showed good fight at the end of that three-mile trip, and though he still has to prove he can win going longer than that, he is unexposed over fences with four wins in four starts.
Firefox has not yet broken through at the top level for trainer Gordon Elliott, but he has been competitive at the level. In his first try going at least three miles, last out in the Irish Gold Cup, he finished fourth. He has room to move forward if he gained any fitness from that, and that race is often a live prep for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. At a huge price, he has exotics and even each-way appeal.
Envoi Allen is 12, so getting on in years by Gold Cup standards, but he is still running competitively against strong horses and his trainer Henry de Bromhead knows how to get a horse to reach their best at Cheltenham.
