But still, the Hinchcliffe incident cements our thesis: comedy roasts are in fashion again. This has been a staple of the American comedy scene since the 1960s thanks to a series of shows. It really picked up in the 2000s thanks to a Comedy Central show focused on doing so for big-name celebrities like Bruce Willis, Justin Bieber, Pam Anderson, and even Trump himself before he was a politician.
Thanks to the proliferation of streaming services, roasts have returned. They are cheap to produce — having to only pay the participating guests and a nice venue hall, not like a series or movie.
