Round 11 of the 2024 Formula 1 season is the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. As well as Sunday’s Grand Prix, there is also a Sprint Race on Saturday, all adding to the excitement in what is Red Bull’s home race. Max Verstappen (-188) is the betting favorite. The Dutchman is looking for a third straight successive win. Can he do it? We tell you the answer in our latest Formula 1 betting picks.
The 2024 Austrian Grand Prix is the second race of a triple header, sandwiched in between last Sunday’s race in Spain and the British Grand Prix. In the 2023 race, Max Verstappen was the victor. His win came in the middle of his ten-race winning streak. Verstappen also claimed the pole position in 2023.
On Sunday he will be looking to win his team’s home Grand Prix for the fifth time. The triple-world champion will also be looking for his third win in a row having won the Canadian Grand Prix and last Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.
The back-to-back wins have seen Verstappen open up a 69-point lead over Lando Norris at the top of the Drivers’ Championship. Verstappen now has 219 points, Norris has 150. Charles Leclerc is still in the mix. The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix winner has 148 points.
The battle lines have been drawn in recent weeks and it now appears that the F1 Drivers’ Championship is a straight fight between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.
Frustration must be starting to creep into the McLaren camp. In Canada, they made a small error that allowed Verstappen to undercut Norris and gain an advantage after the safety car was deployed. The result was Verstappen winning the race by 3.879 seconds ahead of Norris.
On Sunday in Spain, Norris was in pole position. He then slipped to third place after a poor start, allowing George Russell and Verstappen to overtake him at the first corner. Russell led. But Verstappen quickly got past the Mercedes and started to pull away.
Norris was stuck behind Russell for a few laps, commentator Karun Chandhok claimed it cost Norris over 4 seconds. Norris then had a late poor pitstop, 1.6 seconds slower than Verstappen’s. The result saw Verstappen win by 2.219 seconds ahead of Norris.
These were both races McLaren could have won. There is no doubt now that Red Bull’s superiority has gone. The question is, can McLaren cut out the small errors that are costing the team race wins?
Max Verstappen was -225 to win in Spain. To win in Austria this Sunday, Verstappen is -188. Lando Norris is the second favorite at +300.
Charles Leclerc is third in the betting at +1200. The Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are +2000. Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez are +2500 and Oscar Piastri is +2800.

Max Verstappen is still the favorite to win the 2024 Drivers’ Championship. The Dutchman is unchanged at -2000 to win his fourth successive championship.
Following the No.1 Red Bull driver in the betting is Lando Norris at +1000. Charles Leclerc looks like the only other viable candidate. The Ferrari man is +2000.
It was another disappointing weekend for Ferrari with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finishing in fifth and sixth respectively. The planned upgrades were carried out on the cars, but the result wasn’t what was desired.
Charles Leclerc suggested that the upgrades had worked, but the car was lacking in pace somewhere else. The problem for Ferrari fans and backers is knowing or predicting when it’s all going to come together for the Prancing Horse team.
So after an underwhelming weekend in Spain, is it worth persisting with Ferrari in the hope that they might be better in Austria having had a trial run in Spain?
We believe it could be worth a go in the shorter Sprint race. Charles Leclerc is +1200 and Carlos Sainz +2500. We are backing both to win the Sprint in the Austrian Grand Prix.
As for our race winner pick, it looks like a 60/40 split between Verstappen and Norris.
Norris has the beating of Verstappen. But the Dutchman keeps finding a way to win. The weekend we pick Verstappen to win will no doubt be the weekend that Norris wins.
Adding further intrigue are the Ferrari cars. Could their upgrades work this weekend? Maybe.
Verstappen is beatable. So we will back the field against the Dutchman for our betting pick. BetOnline is offering +150 on anybody other than Verstappen winning. That is our pick.
