Taiba is going to be tough in the Haskell. Though inexperience caught up with him in the Kentucky Derby, now he turns back in distance and has that tougher race behind him. He is already a Grade 1 winner at a mile and an eighth, he has tactical speed, and both his trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith are all-time leaders by wins in this race.
Jack Christopher is the other horse expected to be most heavily bet, but this is the time to bet against him. He has yet to try any two-turn trip, and now he stretches all the way to a mile and an eighth against a field that features three Grade 1 winners at the trip. Though Chad Brown is good at training routers, nothing about Jack Christopher’s pedigree suggests he wants this far. At low odds, make him prove it.
Cyberknife and White Abarrio are the other nine-furlong Grade 1 winners in the Haskell field. Between them White Abarrio looks stronger: he faced a tougher field last out in the Ohio Derby than Cyberknife faced in the Matt Winn (G3), and drew a cleaner post compared to Cyberknife’s rail draw. This gives White Abarrio a solid chance to make the frame, though Cyberknife would be no surprise in the exotics if he handles the rail well.
On form so far, Howling Time is the best of the new faces. Though he had previously struggled in graded stakes company, he battled Cyberknife in the Matt Winn and lost by just a nose, suggesting that his form is improving. His tactical speed is also an asset. He does have to prove that he can bring his form away from Churchill, but at the likely price he has enough going for him to be interesting.
Benevengo is also interesting for the deepest exotics. Though he has a lot of class to prove against this group, note that his off-the-board try in his only stakes attempt came over a sloppy track. All three of his dry-track races have been wins. Though he has to improve, he has shown tactical speed and good fast-track form, and his last-out allowance win puts him closer to this form than the other real outsiders.
