The English Greyhound Derby is steep in tradition and carries a not-so-brief history. There is something about famous events like these that draw out unexpected crowds and of course large betting volume. Though not legal in most of the United States, dog racing is very much alive and well in Europe. There are betting options in the States and even one state after this year, West Virginia, that will still hold dog racing.
The first Derby began in 1927 and has run every year since aside from the World War II years. The event has seen a little of everything. From donnybrooks to some amazing finishes, the racing is lightning quick. With an over 500 meter length in this race, the dogs have to have phenomenal stamina and be in peak, top shape to handle what has been a gruelling schedule over the last six weeks.
Multiple winners of the event are rare and Thorn Falcon (the 2021 winner) will not be in this year’s event. The last repeat winner was Westmead Hawk who won the race in 2005 and 2006. Among trainers, Charlie Lister has won the event seven times. Nick Savva is the only trainer to win three consecutive derbies. Four Irish greyhounds qualified for the final on Saturday. However, that happened last year and guess what occurred.
Four Irish finalists through to the @StarSports_Bet /TRC English Greyhound Derby @towcester_tv next Saturday . . mind you we had four last year and they finished third, fourth, fifth and sixth! 😇

The big thing at VegasBetting, we suggest, is to keep in mind the whole body of work. Princess Jet and Romeo Magico may be very fast but Kildare is a gutsy greyhound to watch. Kildare edged out two arguably faster dogs on Saturday to win the second semifinal. That gives him merit on our English Greyhound Derby picks from Towcester, England.
Romeo Magico is still an early favorite for the English Greyhound Derby. The greyhound ran a masterful race in the first semifinal on Saturday and won easily in a time of 29.06 seconds. That was the fastest time out of all twelve racers. He is trained by Graham D Holland, who has won three Irish Greyhound Derby. The question is now what can Romeo Magico do in the Final?
Now, the Irish greyhounds like we said have been plagued with misfortune over the last year or so. Last year, it was Thorn Falcon who stunned the field by winning the derby over debatably four faster Irish greyhounds. That was quite a coup for the English. It is why just because Romeo Magico has looked great, that does mean everything. The greyhound still has to prove it on Raceday and next Saturday is one unlike any other.

With the last few results leading up to the Final on Saturday, it appears Romeo Magico is in good form. Are there other greyhounds that can run faster times? That answer is yes. Is it possible? Well, considering the semifinal races were run under rainy conditions. The Irish dasher sped his way to victory and turned in a tourney best to boot. What more could one ask for under the circumstances?
Now, the good news for Romeo Magico is that Signet Goofy go out in the semifinal. This is because, unlike most of the other contenders, Signet Goofy did seem to be able to mark Romeo Magico and even outpace him at the ends of races. So, that opens the field up some for the greyhound. Though Priceless Jet looms, Romeo Magico has triumphed before over the Jet. Romeo Magico has value in the English Greyhound Derby picks.
Fortunately, there are some other names to take a look at for this year’s English Greyhound Derby. One has to wonder about Priceless Jet and even Mickys Barrett. For those wondering, Mickys Barrett is a long shot and was in semifinal number one on Saturday but he found a way to a 29.33 second time qualifying him for this Saturday’s race.
There was Hello Hammond and Lautaro but they do not carry that early 16 to 1 ante like Mickys Barrett. The problem with the Jay Gray-trained greyhound is closing speed once he finds the break. Will it be there? That’s the unknown. After all, Mickys Barrett found it in the semifinal to a tournament-best. Can the greyhound do it again?
That being said, Mickys Barrett is worth an ante flyer at +1600. Priceless Jet showed the form needed and if the “Jet” gets in a full sprint with Romeo Magico, the Jet has the closing speed and bursts to best “the best” as they say. Priceless Jet (28.88 tourney best) is worth taking a hedge bet on and could shorten to be a favorite on Saturday night.
Take Romeo Magico one more time as our top option to win the 2022 English Greyhound Derby.
