September is here, and the San Diego Padres are not completely out of the wildcard race. So, this may be a time to go against a Philadelphia team that is looking toward the postseason. We plunge into this Tuesday night game with the San Diego Padres at home versus the Philadelphia Phillies. So, San Diego must keep winning. The Padres carry some value. VegasBetting begins the baseball week with Phillies vs Padres Betting Picks.
Can the San Diego Padres make a run for the wildcard this September?
Unfortunately, the San Diego Padres are an odd team to figure out. Our hesitation with San Diego goes back to April, when the Padres were picked to at least gain a wildcard spot into the National League playoffs. Again, even the first month of the season saw San Diego sputter. Recently, they have started to play better, but is it a case of too little, too late?
Philadelphia carries a mediocre record on the road with a 35-35 mark, and yet San Diego is only 38-35 at home in 2023. Oddly enough, the Phillies have a run differential around +75 and the Padres are a hair under +60. Again, too many games have seen San Diego find ways to lose as opposed to win. The Padres remain a league-worst 6-22 in one-run contests. That includes an 0-11 mark in extra innings.
San Diego dropped a tough matchup in the opening game of the series. Philadelphia is now a season-high 15 games over .500. Meanwhile, the Padres are back to nine games under .500. At the very minimum, San Diego needs to find a way to get to .500 and then hope for a lot of help. The Padres have a better pitcher at home for this matchup at least. On Monday, the Padres even got past the five-run mark, which is saying something at home.
Okay, BetOnline and their best Vegas online Sportsbook review, throws out some more potential wagers. This week should be a tell-tale sign of San Diego’s fledgling chances (1.6%). Again, they are on the edge of the radar for a wildcard spot. With teams jamming up above them, there is a tiny window for the Padres to get back into this crazy thing.
Now, the Phillies vs Padres Betting Picks for Tuesday figure to see fewer runs scored at Petco Park. However, when you look at the starting pitchers, there is some hesitation. Michael Lorenzen struggled in his previous three starts after two gems. He has allowed 13 earned runs in his last 15 innings pitched. He has won three of his last four decisions, though. San Diego counters with Pedro Avila, who is a young pitcher with interesting potential.
Then, VegasBetting went down the rabbit hole. Now, the problem is Avila was pitching in longer relief. He was given two starts, and that is where the problems started. He got throttled against Milwaukee, yielding five runs in 4.1 innings. Avila followed that start-up with some bad luck versus the rival San Francisco Giants. He gave up six runs, but only one was earned. The Padres’ pitcher has a WHIP of 1.385, and walks can be troublesome.
Numbers seem to tilt to the Phillies here. On the other hand, the Padres’ bullpen and offense seem to be a little more comfortable at home of late. This is quite the risk, but San Diego only needs Avila to go four or five innings while not giving up a bunch of runs. Keeping the score manageable is probably his highest priority at this point. That is something Avila has not managed well in his previous two starts. His spot in the rotation is on thin ice.
San Diego wishes they were playing like this when the season started. 2023 represents the season of what might have been. Now, the Padres are a good team with a below-average record. Maybe this will be a year that teaches San Diego a harsh lesson. For Tuesday night, the feeling is that the Padres can fight back once more and eventually repel the Phillies.
Summertime is still here, so is the over a good idea with Phillies vs Padres Betting Picks? Again, this pitching matchup looks decent on the surface, but the numbers say otherwise. Both San Diego and Philadelphia score their share of runs. They combined for 16 on Monday night and the feeling is Tuesday night might be somewhat similar. Could both teams score enough where the double digits are again a possibility?
Alright, going for even an increased Over is on the table. While it may work, there is a somewhat safer possibility. With both teams capable of putting five runs across, the Over at 8.5 is a safe -120. Now, if the bettor is wondering, that 9.5 number rolls in at +120. Furthermore, the San Diego Over 4.5 runs is +115, while Philadelphia’s Over of 4.5 is approaching Even.
Again, this Padres team realizes they are going to have to score some runs against this Philadelphia squad. Using a long-relief pitcher means that the bullpen will be taxed again. The goal for San Diego is to try and work the Phillies’ pitching much the same way. On second thought, let us try to take the more risky choice for Tuesday night.
MLB Vegas Online Betting Sites thinks about a few more bets, err props. Look at the Unders for both pitchers in terms of strikeouts.
