Underdogs Run Wild
Underdogs ruled the day against NFL betting lines last week.
There are now only nine undefeated teams left out of 32 after just two weekends of football. The three biggest surprises at 2-0 include the Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All three teams had losing records last year.
There are also nine winless teams, including the bickering Pittsburgh Steelers, who won the AFC North last season.
“It’s not fun, but it’s still early,” said Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who had 60 pass attempts in the team’s five-point loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Favorites were 5-9-1 against the spread and 8-6-1 straight up in Week 2. There was one pick ‘em game between Cincinnati and Baltimore on Thursday night.
Let’s take a look at a few top picks against the spread (odds provided by TopBet) and straight-up selections for all 16 games in Week 3.
Atlanta (-3) over New Orleans
A 1-1 record after two home games to start the season has many fans asking, what’s wrong with the Saints?
Drew Brees and company lost to Tampa in the opener and then squeezed past Cleveland in Week 2. They now take their game on the road to Atlanta where the Falcons have won their last two meetings between these two division rivals.
The Saints needed 18 points and a missed field goal in the fourth quarter to produce their first win. They won’t be as lucky against the Falcons, who lost their season opener at Philadelphia before beating Carolina by a touchdown.
Matt Ryan had a big day against the Panthers. He should have another one against the Saints’ secondary.
Tampa Bay (+2.5) over Pittsburgh
Don’t look now, but all three teams from Florida are 2-0 — Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa Bay.
The Bucs take to the field in prime time on Monday night at Raymond James Field in Tampa. Tampa may have finished last in the NFC South last season, but the team started off the season with victories over New Orleans and Philadelphia — the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Even with that explosive start, the Bucs are still gaining little respect from oddsmakers as they are underdogs against a winless team.
The Steelers have been in disarray from Day 1 of training camp, first with the holdout of Le’Veon Bell and now with the “then trade me” tweets from Antonio Brown. But the bigger problem is the Pittsburgh secondary which gave up six touchdown passes against K.C. last weekend.
It’s time to hop on the Tampa Bay bandwagon.
