HomeAdvantage

Home advantage is one of those things that we just accept as sports fans, but is it really true that the home team has more chance of getting a win than the away team?

In theory, professional players should be able to play their best game no matter where the game is taking place, yet we always assume that the home side has that slight advantage over their opponent.

But just how true is the idea of home advantage? We’ve analysed the results of the last five seasons in the USA’s four biggest sports leagues, the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL, to find out.

When we look back at the results of the previous five years, we can see that the concept of home advantage is definitely a valid one, with home teams in each sport winning more games than those on the road; influenced by not just the atmosphere but the away team often being disadvantaged due to travel-induced fatigue.

The NBA is the sport with the most noticeable home advantage, with home teams winning 59% of games over the last five years, compared to 41% for away teams, followed by the NFL, where home teams win 57% of the time.

On the other hand, while home advantage definitely exists in hockey and baseball, it’s slightly less, with home teams winning 55% of games in the NHL and 53% in the MLB.

Of all the teams in these four leagues, it was the New England Patriots of the NFL who had the greatest home advantage, who won 85% of their home games in the last five years, narrowly beating the Golden State Warriors of the NBA, who won 84% of home games in the same period.

On the other hand, the team who seemingly has the least home advantage is the Cleveland Browns, also of the NFL, who won less than a third of their home games.

As we’ve seen, the team with the overall best and worst home advantages in our research were both found in the NFL, the New England Patriots and the Denver Browns.

The Pats won 34 games at Gillette Stadium over the past five seasons, winning 34 and losing just six, with no ties.

In contrast, the Cleveland Browns lost more than twice as many games as they won at the FirstEnergy Stadium, with a win percentage of just 30%.

NBA

Basketball was the sport with the highest overall home-field advantage that we looked at, with the home team picking up the win almost 60% of the time.

The team that benefits the most from this advantage is the Golden State Warriors, one of the most successful teams of recent times, who won 84% of their games at Chase Center, closely followed by the San Antonio Spurs on 82%.

The Phoenix Suns hold the worst record, with 72 wins and 132 losses at home, so will be hoping that their potential $230m renovation of Talking Stick Resort Arena will help matters on the court.

NHL

Teams in the NHL have the least home advantage of the four sports that we looked at, with the home side winning 52.8% of the time and it’s been suggested one of the reasons for this is that hockey referees don’t make as many foul calls, calls which are likely to be affected by a lively home crowd.

The hockey team with the biggest home advantage is the Tampa Bay Lightning, with winning 69% of games at the Wells Fargo Centre, while the Buffalo Sabres won just 40% of their home games.

Methodology

All information was taken from the official standings of each of the four leagues and refer solely to the regular season, from 2014 to 2018:

Note that when comparing leagues, the percentages of home and away don’t quite add up to 100% in the NFL and NHL, due to a small number of tied games.
